Custom Borderlands DAHL Pistol (1:1 Scale)

To say this was a new adventure for me, would be undermining the entire process. This was insanely fun, but unfortunately it was a last minute job and the finite details are kind of missing in some spot. I am still insanely proud of this, though.  Basically, my wife (www.thinkgemini.com) and I decided to do a little cosplaying for the Texas Frightmare Weekend horror convention.  I figured since I had blonde hair and 90% of the costume already, I’d go as one of my favorite DC characters, John Constantine (none of that BS Keanu Reeves mess).  For Christine, we created an original character from our favorite couples’ retreat… Borderlands.  We both really like Dr. Zed the friendly neighborhood Pandora medic… but we wanted to kind of make his female counterpart Internet rule 63 – For every male character there is a female version. No Exceptions. So, Nurse Dez was born.  I was mainly tasked with building a borderlands style gun for the outfit. I have seen a ton of NERF guns modded to work and thought that was a great idea. We had a bunch of NERF guns left over in a bin, so I got to work.  I actually used the NERF CS-6 Recon rifle base and turned it into a large Borderlands style pistol.  The process is documented visually in the gallery below.  It’s basically a combo of spray paint for the base and texture. The fine details were done by using model master acryl, citadel paints and sharpie markers for the comic book accents.  Sanding the logos off with my dremel took a very long time… I used ID badge cards for the flat front and back of the guns. Cut and sanded to mesh well with the gun.  I also cut the DAHL logo out of cardstock… had I not rushed that process it would have came out really nice, but it looks fuzzy/blurred because I held the stencil too far away from the gun when spraying… not too shabby for my first attempt, though.
